Linguists explain why Sarah Palin has such an emotional connection

Linguists explain why Sarah Palin has such an emotional connection with her audience

When you think of Sarah Palin's speech, a few features tend to stand out. Her unique accent, for example, or her folksy expressions like "Joe Six-Pack" and "hockey mom."
The former Alaska governor reemerged last week with a one-of-a-kind speechendorsing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, drawing renewed attention to her curious rhetorical style.
But researchers have identified one aspect of Palin's speech that is particularly distinctive. And though it probably goes unnoticed by most listeners, it may be the most powerful speaking technique in her arsenal.
Take these quotes from Palin's speech endorsing Trump:
"It’s why we see these lousy trade deals that gut our industry for special interests elsewhere."
"Now they’re concerned aboutthis ideological purity?"
"They’ve been wearing this political correctness kind of like a suicide vest.”
"I’m going to tell you about that libertarian streak in him."
And this one from a campaign rally the next day, when Palin addressed her son's arrest:
"I can certainly relate with other families who kind of feel these ramifications of some PTSD."
In each of these quotes, Palin is using a particular set of words: "this," "that," "these," and "those." Linguists call these demonstratives, or "pointing words."
Take, for example, when Palin said 2008 GOP nominee John McCain "sounded that warning bell" in 2008. It was as if she were pointing to something both she and her audience were familiar with.
"We all know the warning bell she's talking about, right?" wrote linguist Mark Liberman on the blog Language Log. "That one over there, always in the back of our shared experience."
Linguists Eric Acton and Christopher Potts also argued in their 2014 study that Palin was using demonstratives as a way to establish common ground with her audience, as if the two parties have some sort of "private shared knowledge" to draw upon.

Crazies, Madmen, Lunatics And The Palin Deranged (But I Repeat Myself)

It's coming up to eight years since Governor Palin was chosen as John McCain's running mate. From the day the lunatics, crazies and just plain bonkers latched on to her to express their fantasies, hates, frustrations and, well just plain idiocy.

The hate from political opponents, especially the"progressives' at hate sites like Daily Kos and Wonkette and the like is ultra-partisan and understandably. over the years these people have either grown up or gone off in different directions in the main. But the hard core of Palin deranged (PDS) still carry on with their fantasies.

Their is a group of loonies who mostly hang out at a site for the mentally challenged 'Immoral Minority" who seem to live their entire lives with Palin as some sort of hate symbol and crutch for their sad lives. They still believe that Palin"faked her son Trig's birth" when any reasonable person would consider that a mad idea to hold.

They follow everything Palin does and attack everything about her, her looks, her family, her lifestyle. Any difficulty she has is seized upon like a pack of hyena's ripping into a kill-it's like a wildlife film.

I have tried to puzzle this out. Palin isn't a candidate, she holds no office, they describe her as "irrelevant', forgotten. She of course has no personal effect on their lives, their mortgages their garage bill so it is an utter mystery why they continue on. The inhabit Blogs and web site comment sections arguing with people they do't know they write blogs entirely dedicated to attacking Palin . Why Joe Lieberman or John Edwards, Paul Ryan who are also losing VP candidates don't come in for this attention is another oddity.

It seems to me that somehow Palin is a scapegoat for their failed lives. They see her living a life of wealth, glamour and excitement and look in the mirror an see fat, old ugly, failures-there can be other explanation.

The major figures in this sad parade of harpies and dullards and obsessives are;

KatieAnnieOakley
English Springer Spaniel
Malai Litman
Caribou Barbie

Who for all I know may be one and the  same person-it would not surprise me in the least if some of these crazies have multiple personalities. Some of these nutcases even send me emails and comments  (anonymously as they are rank cowards) which, after an  glance I send to the rubbish bin-as if anything a crazed person says could worry me or be taken as having any meaning.

I also have no doubt to one some psychologist will do a major study of these obsessed and strange denizens of a weird underworld and will come up with some reasonable analysis.Until then it is laughable, sad and a reflection on a tiny minority on Americana society who are beyond any rationality.

Shooting Straight in Iowa RV's... We Wish
In Minnesota this morn, headed to Iowa, catching CNN's Jake Tapper's tit-for-tat on airport screens - don't know how he stays so patient with politicians repeating poll-tested rehearsed memes in place of answers to his questions; he's got the patience of Job!
Respecting all candidates gutsy enough to run, of course, but Tapper's Rubio/Cruz conventional exchanges in their comfy campaign RV's today make us appreciate worthy rogue candidate(s) even more with their refreshingly unscripted interviews.

Thank Trump for that. Those Rubio/Cruz hits prove RV's can be better tools to extract truthful conversation the way we use ours - hauling gear to hunting grounds to shoot dinner. Out there headed to the wilds inherently includes letting hair down and conversing free and heartfelt. Reporters - try that next time! For voters' edification, see if the guys can shoot straight in that kind of setting.

Catching the next leg from Alaska that lands me at NBC's Iowa doorstep, I look forward to guesting on their Today Show tomorrow morn!

Facebook; Governor Palin Admires Trumps Courage to Skip Out on Debate

Former Gov. Sarah Palin put out a post on Facebook stating how much courage it took for Trump to skip the most recent debate.  Palin herself is well known for her anti-establishment stance so it is no surprise that she admires the same quality in Trump.  Palin is also known for her strong support of our veterans and Trumps Veterans rally really got her fired up.
Palin also highlights another major issue.  Trump shines a big spotlight on the media elite and the GOP establishment.  The Democrat rival, Hillary Clinton would be no match to take on Trump on her best day.  But she appears to be on the verge of being indicted for using a private server for classified government information.  Trump is holding all the right cards and at the right time and the Democrats have no counter punch.  Not only that, Trumps move has left the elite without a clue of what to do with themselves.
Palin notes that politicians showed their hypocritical stripes by calling Trump a “chicken” for opting out of participating in this weeks debate and held a fundraiser for our vets instead.  But all of the GOP candidates had threatened to not participate in the Houston debate coming up because CNBC moderators had not been fair in the last one.  They were refusing to participate until changes were made for the moderator line-up.  I didn’t know that and I bet most other people did not either.
Another beloved Republican skipped out on his last Iowa debate and his name was Ronald Reagan.  Like Trump, he was belittled and minimized as nothing more than a Hollywood actor.  In Trumps case, the narrative is he is nothing but an arrogant, blowhard, billionaire.  Well they got the last one right.  As the song by Meatloaf says “two out of three ain’t bad.”  But one out of three is just plain ignorance.
Palin encourages voters to inform themselves because we really can’t trust today’s batch of so called journalists. Palin will attest to how dishonest most are.  She also notes how they have greatly underestimated the populace but we are to blame for that.  We have been lazy and complacent and allowed their arrogance to flourish while we went along with our personal lives citing we were just too damn busy to take part in the foundation of our country.
Palin adds in a subtle comment about an unnamed moderator who we all know as Megyn Kelly citing, why is Kelly allowed to moderate a debate when she goes on her show nightly to express her bias against Trump?
The masses have been simmering and it is now boiling over.  All we needed was an independent leader to begin a revolution.

"Does Sarah Palin still matter in presidential politics?" Apparently In Iowa At Least

Does Sarah Palin still matter in presidential politics?

Byron YorkAMES, Iowa — In September, when Donald Trump appeared before a giant rally in Dallas, a person in the Trump circle described the coming months of the campaign. Sure, a big event like Dallas got headlines, but Trump knew he couldn’t do the same rally, rally, rally for the next several months and expect the public to remain interested. Even then, TrumpWorld was planning a varied (and secret) schedule of special events, bold policy rollouts and other attention-getting gestures to keep the voters’ and the media’s attention over the course of a long campaign.
A recent night in Ames was a prime example of Trump’s timing and showmanship. Bringing Sarah Palin to Iowa grabbed all eyes in the Republican caucus race. And it seriously undercut the notion, growing in some political circles, that GOP rival Ted Cruz has nailed down the support of all of Iowa’s conservatives.
Palin, whose last highly publicized visit to Iowa was a poorly received speech at Rep. Steve King’s candidate summit in January 2015, was her most Palinesque self. Discussing who is and who is not a conservative, for example, she said, “How about the rest of us? Right-winging bitter clinging, proud clingers of our guns, our God, our religions and our Constitution ...” That’s classic Sarah.
But Trump was happy to have Palin for more reasons than her ability to entertain a crowd. Even though she is much diminished from her heyday a few years ago, Palin still has influence among some conservatives. Trump now has that on his side, and just as important, Cruz doesn’t.
At the rally I talked with Jamie Johnson, a veteran Iowa politico who supported Rick Santorum in 2012 and Rick Perry earlier in this race, but is now unaffiliated. Johnson saw the Palin move entirely in terms of persuading voters at the margins of the Trump vs. Cruz contest.
“I think the Palin endorsement is important for all of the tea partiers who were deciding which of the two they were going to vote for,” Johnson said.
Does Palin still have clout in Iowa?
“To tea partiers, she does.”
“How big a part of the electorate is that?”
“Probably 15 to 20 percent of the people who caucus. I’d say 15 to 20 percent would identify themselves as tea partiers more than anything else, such as bornagain evangelicals.”
“And you would expect that some of them are caught on the fence now between Trump and Cruz?”
“I know for a fact that they are,” Johnson replied. “I’ve talked to several people in the last two months who have been on the fence between Trump and Cruz. So if they’re on the fence, this might be just enough to push them over.”
Indeed, at Trump and Cruz events in the last two weeks, I have met plenty of people who were for Trump, with Cruz as their second choice, or were for Cruz, with Trump as their second choice. For some of them, Palin’s seal of approval might make some difference. Before she spoke, I asked several people at the Ames rally whether Palin had worn out her welcome; none thought she had.
“It’s a valuable endorsement because people still view her as an anti-establishment outsider who they can also relate to,” said Craig Robinson, a former Iowa state GOP political director who founded the Iowa Republican blog. “And if there is any strategy to the Trump campaign, it is to dominate the media coverage of the race, and Palin’s endorsement will certainly help with that.”
That’s an understatement. Palin’s appearance with Trump immediately captured nearly all the media’s attention. In the hours and days that followed, it inspired impassioned debate, made talking heads explode, and caused fevered speculation across cable TV.
And for Cruz, there is one final, indirect effect of Palin’s Trump endorsement. In the days ahead, the Cruz camp is left to wonder what Trump has coming up next.
“He has to have another couple of tricks up his sleeve before the caucuses,” said one Cruz supporter recently. The problem is that Team Cruz doesn’t know what those tricks are. They’ll find out when Trump wants them to.

Palin Family Post Images From Memorial Ceremony For Todd Palin's Grandmother's Passing

'We cherished every moment with you': Bristol Palin and her sisters don traditional Alaskan dress to 'celebrate' the life of their late great grandmother with mom Sarah

  • Willow Palin, 21, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a photo of herself posed with her sisters Bristol, 25, and Piper 14
  • The sisters wore kuspuks, hooded overshirts that are commonly worn among Alaska Natives, to their great grandmother's memorial service
  • Their father Todd's grandmother Helena 'Lena' Andree passed away last Wednesday at the age of 95
  • On Monday, Bristol returned to work at the Alaska Dermatology Laser and Skin Cancer Center in Anchorage, after one month of maternity leave
  • She is currently embroiled in a custody battle with her Marine ex Dakota Meyer over her one-month-old daughter Sailor Grace
Bristol Palin and her siblings wore Alaskan kuspuks to celebrate their great-grandmother's heritage at her memorial service on Wednesday night.
The 25-year-old and her sisters Willow, 21, and Piper, 14, donned the colorful tunic-length hooded overshirts that are commonly worn among Alaska Natives to mourn their father Todd's grandmother,  Helena 'Lena' Andree, who passed away last Wednesday at the age of 95.
Willow took to Instagram that night to share a photo of herself with her sisters at the memorial service, writing:  'Celebrating our Great Grandma's 95 years of life.. We loved and cherished every moment spent with you Gg, and know you were smiling ear to ear looking down at everyone being together today. See you soon Gg. [sic]'

Bristol also snapped a photo of the event, sharing a photo of her seven-year-old brother Trig, who has Down syndrome, pursing his lips while her 14-year-old sister Piper looks behind him.
'Mood. always,' she wrote when she posted the image on Instagram.
The day after Lena's death Bristol took to her blog to show her gratitude for having her great-grandmother in her life.
'I always admired my great grandmother GG. This week, she passed away at the age of 95,' she wrote. 'She is in a better place and feels no more pain. We’re all at peace at having witnessed a life lived to the fullest.
'Thanks, GG, for all of the lessons you taught us… most of those lessons which were taught without any words at all.'

She also took to Instagram to share an old picture of herself with Willow and Piper as they posed with Lena, writing: '5 generations under my beautiful great grandma Lena, rest in paradise we love you GG [sic].'
Before Lena's memorial service, Bristol's mother, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin shared old photos of Lena, a picture of the program from the event, and a snapshot of her daughters on her Facebook page.
'Celebrating a Great life tonight in Alaska [sic],' she captioned the series of four images.
In the images, Lena can be seen wearing a buffalo plaid vest as she happily holds a large fish that has been caught.

Another photo sees a young Sarah and two of her children posed with Lena.
It has been a busy week for Bristol, who returned to work on Monday only a month after giving birth to her daughter Sailor Grace.
The mother-of-two revealed earlier this week that she was leaving her daughter for the entire day for the first time since her birth in order to head back to work.
To commemorate the end of her short maternity leave, Bristol shared a photo of herself holding her newborn in a car seat as she posed with Tripp, her seven-year-old son with her ex-boyfriend Levi Johnston.
'Back to real life today! I was fortunate enough to take the last month off to stay home with my babies, today marks the first time I've left SailorG, but I could not be more thankful she's in the best of hands!! [sic],' she captioned the family photo.

In the image, Bristol is wearing a black long sleeve shirt, black pants, taupe ballet flats, and a chunky gold necklace. Her hair is pulled half-way up while her Louis Vuitton bag sits open in front of her with her water bottle peeking out.
Tripp is pictured in a neon green Nike sweatshirt, camouflage cargo pants, and red Nike sneakers, presumably heading off to school, while Sailor is bundled up in her pink carrier with only a bit of her head peaking out.
And while some people may think a one-month long maternity leave is too short, Brisol's mother Sarah Palin only took three days off after her youngest son Trig was born with Down syndrome in 2008.
Despite her reality show and appearances on Dancing with the Stars, the daughter of the former Republican vice presidential candidate has apparently been working at Dr. Michael L. Cusack's office at Alaska Dermatology Laser and Skin Cancer Center in Anchorage for years.

Bristol is currently embroiled in a custody battle with her ex-fiance and Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer, 27, who is making a bid to get joint custody of her one-month old daughter Sailor.
The former reality star, who often shares photos of her children and family adventures on Instagram, announced her daughter's birth on social media on December 24 with a photo of her cuddling her newborn in bed.
Meanwhile, her ex-fiance shared his own precious snap of the mother with her newborn on his Twitter account on Christmas Eve, after months of speculation over whether he is in fact Sailor's father.
Dakota is now being forced to take a paternity test as part of the former couple's increasingly bitter custody battle over her new baby.
Overjoyed: Bristol announced the birth of her daughter in December by sharing this photo on Instagram, however, some believe the baby was actually born on November 4 because of the date scribbled on her IV line

Broken romance: Bristol got engaged to marine Dakota Meyer (pictured), 27, in March, but eventually called off their wedding. They are now in a custody battle over Sailor Grace
Court documents seen by Daily Mail Online reveal that Meyer's bid for joint custody in a suit filed in Kentucky and Alaska has stalled pending the results of the paternity test. A question has also been raised over the actual birth date of Bristol's baby.
The Instagram photo posted by Bristol announcing the birth of Sailor on December 24, places the birth date one day earlier. The date of birth on court papers filed in the custody case is also given as December 23.
But the same Instagram picture posted by Dakota with the caption 'Best Christmas present ever!!' reveals a detail whited out in Palin's account – the date scribbled on her IV line.
There, in black and white, is a date that appears to read November 4 – placing the birth almost two months before Bristol claimed.
