Catholic Register;Sarah Palin speaks from the heart and experience about the miracle of life

MATTHEW ARCHBOLD MatthewArchbold You've Got to Watch Sarah Palin Talk About Abortion and Down Syndrome on CNN BY MATTHEW ARCHBOLD 09/07/2015

There's a few things to love here. The way Sarah Palin speaks from the heart and experience about the miracle of life even when one is scared about their child being different.

And then on a more political slant, you've got to appreciate how CNN's Jake Tapper gives Sarah Palin the room to speak from the heart about this issue. It's really quite wonderful.

She was the fifth child of a fairly dysfunctional family, seemingly devoid of love. We lived close to our cousins, but because of her differences and disabilities Jeanie was abhorrent to me. As I grew I noticed how Jeanie became the focus of attention for her entire family, how they grew closer to one another, how they grew to love each other and become more tolerant people. Ever since then I have known how disadvantaged children can literally become living angels for the rest of us - a gift from God, for those of us who are challenged by their own self esteem. Thank you Sarah.

While the prospect of dealing with these needs was scary, we felt we were being called to step forward in faith and do our best. Our son graduated from a Catholic high school, and started at the local state university last month. He has overcome obstacles that many young men and women his age will never have to worry about, and raising him was the hardest thing we have ever done, but we are proud of him, and we continue to push him to do his best. Now here’s the scary part: If he had been conceived in the United States, it is very likely that his genetic disorder would have lead most OBGYNs to recommend terminating the pregnancy rather give birth. That is wrong, and it needs to stop

We have come to expect that agreement in one area with someone should be followed by agreement in all areas. This is neither possible nor desirable. In fact, Sarah Palin is an excellent example of the necessity of discerning individual issues rather taking blind credibility of someone’s position on unrelated matters.
