More than 1,000 people spent their Saturday afternoon in line for a chance to meet former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at a book signing at Oaktree Gun Club in Newhall.

The one-time Republican vice presidential nominee talked, mingled and took photos with hundreds of her fans for several hours while she sold and signed copies of her bestselling devotional “Sweet Freedom: A Devotional.”
Fanfare for Palin peaked long before the event even started, as a line stretched far up a hilly driveway at the gun club.
Some people brought their election signs from the 2008 presidential campaign — which featured the Republican ticket of Palin and Arizona Sen. John McCain — while others wore shirts bearing the names of their favorite candidates in the current Republican presidential field.
Betsy James, owner of the gun store at Oaktree, said she was surprised by how many people turned out to see Palin.
In fact, shortly before 1 p.m., all of Palin’s books were sold out even though there were still more than 200 people in line.
“Today has been tremendous,” James said. “The turnout has been great.
“She (Palin) was really happy to be here and see the many people who turned out, and we are really honored to have her.”
Chatsworth resident Allen Novick was among those who lined up early Saturday to meet Palin.
Novick got several copies of Palin’s book signed as well as his cap, and said she spoke to him and his wife for several minutes.
“She was very sweet, a real person,” Novick said. “She took the time to chat with every person. She didn’t rush anybody.”
Members of the media were not allowed to interview Palin on Saturday.
Palin’s appearance at the local gun club also comes just days from a deadly mass shooting in San Bernardino Wednesday where 14 people were killed.
Since the shooting many elected officials, including President Barack Obama, have called for tougher gun control laws.
Palin’s event was scheduled several weeks prior to the shooting, but the issue was clearly on the minds of many in attendance.
Several gun rights activists walked the long line during the signing, passing out fliers.
“I think it’s important to have someone like Sarah Palin show her support for our facility,” James said. “There is more about guns than what is portrayed in the media.
“Our club is a family friendly facility where people could come and exercise their Second Amendment rights,” James added. “You can see the people who are in line — there’s a lot of families here.”
Novick echoed the sentiment.
“Guns are about safety and not about killing, and it’s important for other conservatives to know that there are plenty of us who don’t agree with the liberal policies in our state,” Novick said.
Saturday’s event was just one of the stops in Palin’s national book tour
